Internal PD

I have been very fortunate to teach at Berkley during a time of intense school-wide professional development programmes:

Te Reo Maaori
Last year, Berkley began a focus on Te Reo Māori as a part of our professional development programme.  We have had both internal and external professional development to assist in enhancing the quality of our delivery of the language.

ICT
Over the last four years, I have received a lot of formal and informal ICT training.  This is to support the use of iPads in my classroom and to support staff with the roll out of Google Drive as a way of recording student achievement as well as a learning tool, particularly for collaborative work (amongst staff and students).  This year, I have been assisting with helping staff with the introduction of using Google Sites for students as a portfolio document to record their growth and learning. I wasone of the first two teachers in the school to receive our new Promethean Activpanel upgrades so that I was be confident in using this before they arrived for the rest of the staff, acting as a mentor.

International Baccalaureate
In 2012, Berkley began its journey to become an accredited International Baccalaureate (IB) School.  Since this time, we have received a lot of training in inquiry teaching (we use the Kath Murdoch approach), and teaching through concepts, together with assessment.  This term, I was one of the first five teachers who led our Y8 and 9 students through carrying out and completing the IB Exhibition.

Literacy Contract
Berkley was a part of the Literacy Contract where we were involved in may PD staff meetings ad observations.  This was intensive for my first 18 months at Berkley

Writing with Gail Loane
I feel that I have been incredibly fortunate to have been working with Gail Loane since 2006.  She is one of New Zealand’s most highly regarded teachers of writing.  She has been in our school approximately 3 or 4 days per term over this time.  In these visits she has observed us, demonstrated by teaching our classes or met with us as teams, plus she usually runs a 2-hour staff meeting after school.

Auckland University Research Project (ARP)
In 2007, Berkley was chosen by a research team from the School of Education in Auckland (lead by Judy Parr and Helen Timperly) to look at the process of teachers giving their peers feedback, and ways to make it more useful in growing both teachers.  This involved many training meetings and seven peer observations (2-way), plus feedback meetings.
